Course Description: Each year, as I teach various canon authors and works of literature, I continue to notice that students miss a great many Biblical references which puts them at a serious disadvantage when it comes to interpreting illusions, themes, symbols, motifs, etc. As a way of remedying this, I've been threatening (for years!) to offer a comparative religions class that would exam the cultures, values, beliefs and rules/laws of the "big three" - Judaism, Christianity, Islam - as well as some other religions. This semester-long class will be heavily focused on discussion in relation to readings and the watching of Morgan Freeman's The Story of God (which aired on National Geographic in 2016-17). The books we'll be reading include Bruce Feiler's Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three FaithsThe Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew - Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Thomas Cahill's The Gift of the Jews, and Heaven: Our Enduring Fascination with the Afterlife by Lisa Miller. The cost of the class is $400 and includes all books.
