Course Description: This offering is for any advanced or honors student not wanting to take a formal English class, but needing an English credit. The student gets to choose the topic (with advisor input) and is in total control of the work. The mentor/advisor makes herself available to the student in the planning stages of the project and on a regular basis as the student undertakes the daunting task of researching, analysing and writing about anything related to literature. The EISP culminates in an end-of-year 25+ page researched literary thesis and/or a complete creative writing portfolio or a single substantial creative work such as a novel. Samples topics are: the works of a particular author such as Hemingway or Fitzgerald; the in depth analysis of a specific work such as Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales; exploring the use and function of magical realism in post-modern fiction; examining the function of soliloquy and monologue in the works of Shakespeare, etc. The student has free rein in choosing a topic and will be encouraged to seek out something that s/he is genuinely passionate about.
